Beach bliss

It's been a while since we updated the blog, that's because we've been chilling out at the beach.  Here is a quick run-down of what we've been doing.

  • We had 3 fantastic days in Ko Tao, which is a small island off the eastern coast of Thailand.  It is famous for diving with dozens of  diving schools.  We didn't try diving but did have a couple of days snorkeling - its so fun!  Saw quite a few cool fishes and corals.
  • Then we went to Ko Phangan for 6 days.  Fun island but we got hit by a cyclone so spent a lot of time sitting around reading or staring out to sea wondering when we could go for a swim... Mike had one run-in with a large hole and emerged from the ocean rather glad to be alive.
  • After that we went over to the West coast to Phuket.  Here we caught up with my old WCC workmate, Dianne and her partner Lawrence. We had 3 fantastic days on the beach. Got sunburned and struggled to find cheap places to eat or sleep. It is a weird place - there are so many European tourists its easy to forget that one is in Thailand.  We were also surprised to discover how much European women like topless sunbathing (and topless beach strolling) and how much European men like budgie smugglers.
  • Next we crossed the border to Malaysia. (We went by land and had no problems in  Southern Thailand).
  • First stop was multicultural Georgetown on Penang Island. We ate Malaysian, Indian & Chinese food (and hamburgers). Visited a Hindu temple, a Muslim Mosque, a Buddhist temple and an English fortress. At the mosque we were given a guided tour, an introductory talk and booklets on Islam. At the Buddhist temple I heard Buddhist chants interrupted by the workmen playing "My Humps" by Black Eyed Peas.
  • Now we are in the Cameron Highlands (arrived today). We are staying at the hill station town of Tanah Rata.  It nice to be surrounded by green scenery and mountains.  And the weather is much more forgiving.
  • Tomorrow we will have a tour of some tea plantations and farms.
We come home in just 2 weeks. So excited!
